Biometric residence permits
Pursuant to Regulation (EC) No 380/2008 of 18 April 2008, residence cards issued after 20 May 2012 must contain an electronic chip with a photo, fingerprint and digital signature. In this way, security against counterfeiting and misuse of residence cards has been significantly strengthened. The decision to include fingerprints in residence cards has been determined at central EU level, as part of the fight against terrorism, human trafficking, illegal immigration and other transnational crime.
Biometric data must be captured when the application is submitted.
To issue biometric residence cards, special equipment to take photos and take fingerprints and signatures is required. Click here to find the nearest mission with these installations: Find Danish embassies and consulates abroad (um.dk)
Can I apply for a residence/work permit if one or more of my fingers are injured?
By law, biometric data must always be included in a biometric residence card. If the index finger is damaged, a biometric residence card can still be issued. In this case, a fingerprint will be captured from another finger.
Should children also have their fingerprints captured?
No, fingerprints of children under 6 years of age do not need to be captured.
What should I bring?
Bring the application and documentation (originals, as well as copies). Copies of the originals must be in color and A4 size. For babies: We recommend bringing a recent photo of the baby, that meets passport picture requirements. Passport photo requirements from Danish Police.
